The latest must-have gadget for anglers is FishHunter (fishhunter.com) and companion apps for iPhone and Android devices. This sonar device isn’t cheap — together with the app it will set you back more than £100 — but then it is a military-grade sonar transducer that’s small enough to float inside a rubber ball. It feeds data about what’s swimming in the water back to your smartphone via Bluetooth.
If you’re more of a twitcher, there are plenty of great apps to help you spot your feathered friends. Audubon (audubonguides.com) has a series of regional guides across iPhone, Android and ebook platforms for easy identification out in the field. You could also pick up the National Geographic field guide to the birds of North America for £6.99.
UK twitchers can go online to rspb.org.uk to figure out what they’re looking at. But if the weather is still too fresh for you to be sitting out in a hide, check out the live webcams on allaboutbirds.org.
