Baking mini break in Paris

At La Cuisine I had a choice between making baguettes or croissants and breakfast pastries. Why make croissants when you can just buy them? Right? But homemade croissants are so good, so flaky, so rich with butter and they have to be eaten very fresh. Best out of the oven. And worth every ounce of effort. Yes, even corner shops sell croissants, but aren't they a bit lacklustre? Usually made with margarine and not butter, and only seeing a human hand when you go to eat it at the end. eatlikeagirl.com

Brazil, it's not us, it's you!

We nearly didn't make it home from Brazil. There was some confusion with the taxi booking and a mumbled excuse about traffic. Who'd have thought it would be busy in Rio at rush hour? Becoming more stressed by the minute, we sat helplessly in our hotel room glumly counting down the minutes to our flight departure. This level of disorganised service had plagued us during our two-week trip, so why should it be any different now. Luckily, we made it, but Brazil just wasn't for us. conversanttraveller.com

Sign language

"Is it really hard for you to travel solo?" is asked by a thousand travellers all over the world. I'll give you one answer, which I know is entirely true to me. Sign language. There are countless backpackers — couples, old, young, and relatives — travelling the world. The common thing they all have is using their voice to speak, which I clearly can't. They can speak with their voice. I can't. Yes, it's necessary for me to repeat this because that's how much I want to emphasise it. I realise how much I really value my sign language. seektheworld.com
