1. Bar Piselli & Tostaduria Bisetti
Open since 1915, it’s where the fun crowd goes for a chat and a drink. Fancy luxurious bars have been traded in for real authentic tradition and Piselli has tons of this. Great place to start the night. Jr. 28 de Julio 297, Barranco.
Chef Arlette Eulert is a protege of top Lima chef Rafael Osterling and Matria is her first solo project. She blends European technique and Peruvian ingredients to great effect with dishes like braised oxtail with polenta and ceviche of scallop and shrimp. matriarestaurante.com
3. Mi Peru
Mi Peru is one of Lima’s tastiest holes in the wall. Loved by locals, it’s created a sensation out of its Crab Concentrate — a broth made from fresh crab — and I can’t recommend the ceviche and ray tortilla enough. Plaza Butters, Barranco.
Following the tragic passing of chef Ivan Kisic in a traffic accident, his friend Percy Alvaro is at the helm of what was to be Ivan’s first solo restaurant. Percy’s molecular gastronomy menu features inventive plates using local ingredients like quinoa, suckling pig, paiche (a freshwater fish) and octopus. Elías Aguirre 179, Miraflores.
5. El Pan De La Chola
Peruvian Jonathan Day is a young self-taught baker who is obsessed about bread and he’s single-handedly repopularising breakfast in the capital — order melt-in-the-mouth sourdough bread with avocado, or with a delicious selection of jams. Av. Mariscal La Mar 918, Miraflores.
