Rooms under £100: Gdansk
Poland's most colourful port city sits pretty on the shores of the Baltic, with its painted buildings, cobbled streets and some thrifty places to bed down
Gdańsk Old Town, Poland
01 Dwór Oliwski
Five-star quality, historic touches such as a thatched roof and timbered walls, and a magical location in a park — there's not much to dislike about the Dwór Oliwski. The sun-soaked bedrooms offer a chic, modern take on rustic, while the huge spa is cool contemporary. Rooms from £82. dworoliwski.pl
02 Hotel Grand Cru
A converted riverfront warehouse with exposed brick galore, the Grand Cru is Gdansk's most prominent boutique option, with modern furniture and soft colours tempering the design from industrial to chic. The super-cool rooms are relatively spacious, but beware the semi-peekaboo bathrooms. Rooms from £68. hotelgrandcru.pl
03 Dom Aktora
Formerly a hangout for Poland's theatrical set (hence the name, which means 'actors' home'), this pretty Old Town hotel, spread across two 19th-century buildings, has retained the boho theme with art in every room and a small gallery where guests are invited for tea and coffee daily. Rooms from £34. domaktora.pl
04 Gotyk House
If you want history, you can't do better than this, a building from 1451 set on historic Mariacka Street. Said to be the place that Copernicus met his mistress Anna Schilling, there's a museum in the basement, and even the smallest of the simple rooms have great Old Town views. Rooms from £38. gotykhouse.eu
