National Geographic Traveller (UK) has teamed up with The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel in Florida and tailor-made holiday specialist Travelbag to offer one reader the chance to win seven nights in this amazing destination.
Made up of more than 100 islands strung along the Gulf of Mexico, the area is renowned for its laid back, barefoot attitude, incredible array of wildlife and perpetual sunshine. Days here are spent reconnecting with nature and loved ones, exploring deserted beaches and the water, and eating the great array of food.
Top picks for a visit to the region include:
Island hopping: Do it by kayak or boat – just get out on the water, explore the islands. Chances are you’ll be able to nab a whole beach to yourself for the day.
Wildlife watch: Head to J.N. ‘Ding’ Darling National Wildlife Refuge to see everything from snowy egrets and ospreys, to manatees and alligators.
Catch of the day: Fishing is serious business here – cast your own line and see what you catch for dinner.
Food, glorious food: Fresh seafood, Southern classics and big American feasts all feature on the menus here – try out Cabbage Key, Ford Garage and The Bubble Room for some of the region’s best fare.
One lucky entrant will win a seven-night stay for two at the DiamondHead Beach Resort & Spa in The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel, including international return flights and transfers. The winner will stay in a Gulf View Suite, and will be able to indulge themselves at this beach front property, with access to the resort’s facilities.
